The BrooksDay Steering Committee can use your help building up to the event, on June 7th, and afterwards.

Call for Ushers

On June 7th we will need a crew to greet and make welcome all of the attendees.

BrooksDay, now in our fifth year, is volunteer driven and needs a dozen more helping hands to run the event.

BrooksDay@Nite: Praise & Jubilation is the centennial celebration of the life and works of the Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks.

The evening will consist of a pre-show reception, and an ambitions night of 100 one minute performances of music, dance, memories, original poems and of course a good bit of Miss Brooks’ poetry read by presenters such as: Tyehimba Jess, Angela Jackson, Haki Madhubuti, Nate Marshall, Kevin Coval, Marcus Dunlevy, Runako Jahi, Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Patricia Smith ,Tara Betts, C. Russell Price, Natasha Estevez, Mario Smith, and Nicole Bond.

We need volunteers to:

  • greet arriving guests and assure them they are in the right place
  • direct guests to the pre-show reception in the tented courtyard
  • direct and assist guest into the performance hall
  • even act as runners carrying the mid-show critical messages about the building
    • every good show always needs a runner 🙂

Since the space is new to many guest we anticipate needing 12 volunteer ushers.
With doors opening at 5:30 pm we are asking volunteers to arrive at 5:00 pm in the lobby of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts at 915 E 60th St, Chicago, IL 60637 for a brief orientation by the event program coordinator, Paul Roberts. Volunteers are asked to dress in all black or other semi-formal attire befitting the 100th birthday celebration of a United States Poet Laureate.

A cake reception will conclude the event about 9:00 pm.

Ample free street parking is available.
